Pembroke, NC

Pembroke is a small, welcoming town in southeastern North Carolina shaped by two major anchors: the Lumbee Tribe and the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. As the tribal seat of the Lumbee people, the community has a rich Native heritage that is visible across town, from tribal center events to historic campus landmarks like Old Main. The university adds a nice layer of college-town energy, bringing arts performances at the Givens Performing Arts Center, collegiate sports, and a steady mix of students and faculty to the area.

Daily life has a relaxed, rural pace with plenty of local traditions throughout the year. The biggest highlight is Lumbee Homecoming each July, a weeklong celebration that fills the streets with parades, live music, road races, and food vendors serving up regional favorites like collard sandwiches. For outdoor downtime, the nearby Lumber River offers quiet stretches for kayaking, canoeing, and fishing, giving new residents an easy balance of small-town roots and scenic open space.
