Pembroke, NC

Pembroke is a Robeson County town about 90 miles inland from the Atlantic, and it serves as the tribal seat of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina. The 2020 census counted 2,823 residents. The University of North Carolina at Pembroke gives the town a second defining institution: the campus grew from a school created to educate Native students and remains tied to Lumbee history, regional teaching, and cultural work.
