Pennock, MN

Pennock is a city in Kandiyohi County, Minnesota, on U.S. Route 12 in the state's west-central farm country. The community began as Saint Johns in 1871, when the Great Northern Railway reached the area and laid out a station. A second Saint Johns station elsewhere on the line created a naming problem, so the post office and town became Pennock in 1891, honoring George Pennock, a railroad superintendent based in Willmar.

That change captures the town's early rhythm: rail service first, a dependable name second, and a growing network of roads and farms around it. U.S. 12 now provides the main through route, while the surrounding fields connect Pennock to the larger Kandiyohi County agricultural economy. The city is small, but the railroad story gives it a clear beginning and a name with a person behind it.
