Pentwater, MI

Between Lake Michigan and 500-acre Pentwater Lake, Pentwater is an Oceana County village with a channel connecting the inland lake to the big lake and the county’s only port access to Lake Michigan. The village began as a lumbering and manufacturing town: Charles Mears built the channel in 1855 so lumber could move to Chicago, and the village was incorporated in 1867. That working waterfront later turned toward tourism, but the channel, piers, marina, and lake still organize the place. The channel still carries boats between the two lakes.

Charles Mears State Park occupies the west end of Lowell Street with a 50-acre beach, pier, campground, trail, and weekly nature programs. Downtown life gathers around the Village Green, where the seasonal farmers market runs Mondays and Thursdays and the village calendar includes concerts, art fairs, and festivals. The village’s key connection is visible at the channel, where the old lumber route, the marina, and boats heading for Lake Michigan meet.
