Pepin, WI

Pepin is a town stretched between lake country and farm country in western Wisconsin. Lake Pepin, the broad natural widening of the Mississippi River, forms the town’s southern edge, while the Chippewa River meets the Mississippi nearby to the east. Roads run past rural homes, fields, wooded folds, and little water crossings, with the village of Pepin serving as the familiar stop for a beach, marina, food, and a look across the lake. The town also includes pockets such as Lund, Lakeport, Barry Corner, Devils Corner, and Hawkins Corner, so the local map is more scattered than a single downtown grid.

Pepin’s biggest story arrives in a cabin-sized package. Laura Ingalls Wilder was born in the Big Woods near here in 1867, and the Little House Wayside marks that birthplace about a mile southeast of Lund. The reconstructed cabin and the Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum in nearby Pepin make the area a natural starting point for following her early Wisconsin years. Come in summer and the place has an easy rhythm: Great River Road views, boats on Lake Pepin, winding county roads, and visitors moving between the lakeshore and the woods that shaped one of America’s best-known childhood stories.
