Petersburg, IN

Pike County's seat sits on the lower White River, laid out in 1817 and named for Peter Brenton, the main donor of land for the town site. The river runs just north of the city, and the old Buffalo Trace and Wabash and Erie Canal routes helped make this a county seat and early shipping point. Energy remains part of the surrounding map: AES Indiana's Petersburg Generating Station and newer solar-and-storage facilities sit near town, with nearby coal mines adding to the local industrial story. Pike County School Corporation is based in Petersburg and operates Petersburg Elementary and Pike Central schools.
