Petersburg, MI

Petersburg is a Monroe County city on a bend of the River Raisin, about halfway between Monroe and Adrian. Richard Peters settled the area in the 1820s and became the first postmaster when the Summerfield post office opened in 1831. Thomas Cole and Austin Wing laid out the community in 1836, and the village incorporated in 1869; the post-office name shifted from Petersburgh back to Petersburg in 1893. It became a city in 1967. The River Raisin forms the city’s northwest edge. Petersburg is one of those places where the naming story, postal timeline, and river all point back to the same early settlement.
