Petersburg, TN

Petersburg is a small town split between Lincoln and Marshall counties, with its layout gathered around a square where State Routes 129 and 130 meet. The town was founded in 1814, incorporated in 1837, and had 528 residents in the 2020 census. Route 130 points northeast toward Shelbyville, while Route 129 runs west to Cornersville and east to Lynchburg; U.S. 431 passes along the west side toward Fayetteville and Lewisburg. With the square, routes, and two-county line folded into the same compact setting, Petersburg is a place where the road map doubles as the town plan.

Petersburg's historic core was placed on the National Register in 1985, and the local backstory reaches into education too: Morgan School once stood here before consolidation. Today the town's civic address is Eastside Square, with town services, a volunteer fire department, parks and recreation, and a water department close at hand. The local picture is a crossroads town with an old square, a two-county footprint, and routes that still do the practical work of tying Petersburg to the surrounding Tennessee communities.
