About Phelps

Phelps is an Ontario County village north of Geneva, set inside the larger Town of Phelps. The 2020 census counted 1,851 residents. The village grew from the early settlement around 1788 and became a trade center along Flint Creek, with tavern, stores, mills, and churches creating the local center. That history belongs to the village itself, while the surrounding town spreads out into the agricultural landscape of the Phelps and Gorham Purchase. The Phelps Community Historical Society and Howe House Museum keep the village's local record close to Main Street.

The community is also known for sauerkraut, a crop and food tradition that gave the wider town its old sauerkraut capital of the world label and still returns each August through the festival. Phelps village sits north of Geneva, with the New York State Thruway crossing the larger town to the north. The local scoop is a compact village center carrying an old mill-and-market history inside a much larger rural town.
