Philadelphia, TN

Philadelphia is a Loudon County city with 607 people at the 2020 census, included in the Knoxville metropolitan area. It sits along Sweetwater Creek, which empties into the Watts Bar Lake impoundment of the Tennessee River a few miles north. William Knox and Jacob Pearson founded Philadelphia in the early 1820s, and the town grew as a business center in the Sweetwater Valley. By the mid-19th century, it had two general stores, a tanning yard, a stillhouse, and a hotel. On October 20, 1863, during the Civil War, two Confederate cavalry regiments attacked and routed a Union brigade at Philadelphia while maneuvering after the Battle of Chickamauga. Today, Philadelphia School serves local elementary students, while older students attend Loudon High School in Loudon.
