Picture Rocks, PA

Picture Rocks is a Lycoming County borough along Muncy Creek, in the foothills southeast of Williamsport. The name comes from pictographs once seen on cliffs above the creek, and the borough occupies the site of a Munsee village remembered through local artifacts and oral history. Settlers received a land warrant in 1773; A.R. Sprout and Amos Burrows later founded the town in 1848, rebuilding a sawmill and establishing a factory that made sashes, doors, and window blinds. Picture Rocks incorporated in 1875.

Waterpower and the creek valley guided the original town, while Center Street and the Burrows and Sprout houses preserve its early shape. Today the borough has Baptist and Methodist churches, small businesses, the George A. Ferrell Elementary School, and connections to East Lycoming School District. The former home and studio of watercolorist John Wesley Little adds an arts thread to the local story, and nearby roads lead toward Hughesville, Muncy, and Williamsport. Picture Rocks is a small creek borough where Native history, millwork, school life, and old house lines remain close together.
