Pilot Grove, MO

Pilot Grove is a Cooper County city in northern Missouri with 665 residents in the 2020 census. The town sits along Route 135, about four miles south of Interstate 70 and roughly 11 miles southwest of Boonville. Before the railroad arrived, a broad grove of hickory trees marked a watering place on the open prairie. Travelers used the trees as a pilot, or guide, and the name stayed with the settlement. The Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railway reached the area in 1873, and the town was platted that year.

The railhead pulled commercial activity toward the present town site, bringing stores, banks, newspapers, churches, and the small civic buildings that still shape the center. Local history also includes Civil War-era movement along the nearby roads, the Orphan Train visits of the 1920s, and a 1945 munitions train wreck. Today Pilot Grove serves the farm country around the township, with Route 135 carrying local traffic and I-70 providing the longer connection. The city grew from a stand of trees and a meeting of trails into a railroad town whose street grid still follows that 1873 shift.
