Pilot Mountain, NC

The mountain comes first in Pilot Mountain. The Sauratown landmark rises near this Surry County town, and the Saura name for it, Jomeokee, is translated as Great Guide or Pilot. Pilot Mountain had 1,443 residents at the 2020 census. The Great Wagon Road brought settlers through the Piedmont, then the Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley Railroad reached town in 1888. The depot became a commercial and social gathering point, and the town incorporated the next year.

That rail-and-farm beginning still shows in the downtown blocks. The Bank of Pilot Mountain, built in 1914, is listed on the National Register, and Main Street continues to hold small businesses, restaurants, and shops. Textiles drove a mid-century economic turn before the industry receded after the 1990s; the town now points to locally owned businesses, vineyards, and newer agricultural work. The mountain and the town share a pop-culture footnote too: Pilot Mountain helped inspire Mount Pilot, the fictional Surry County neighbor in The Andy Griffith Show. A walk through town takes in a railroad town, a nearby state-park landmark, and a TV reference without confusing one for the other.
