Pine Knoll Shores, NC

Pine Knoll Shores sits along Bogue Banks, a barrier island with the Atlantic Ocean to the south and Bogue Sound to the north. Home to around 1,400 year-round residents, it has a quiet feel defined by residential neighborhoods winding under a dense canopy of maritime live oaks. Highway 58 runs right through town, making it easy to hop over to neighboring Atlantic Beach or reach local beach walkways and soundside docks.

The North Carolina Aquarium is the town's most famous landmark, but everyday life is largely residential, with homes lining canals, the golf course, and the shoreline. For major grocery runs, healthcare, and larger employers, locals take the short drive across the bridge to Morehead City. Coastal living here does require keeping an eye on hurricane season and storm tides, but residents get to enjoy uncrowded beaches and a peaceful, shaded island setting.
