Pine Level, NC

Pine Level is a Johnston County town whose name came from the flat pine country that drew early turpentine workers. It was chartered in 1874, and the railroad gave the settlement a train stop, a post office, and a way to move turpentine, farm goods, and mail through eastern Johnston County. Pine Level's older commercial story still has physical reminders: the original D. T. Oliver store survives as a workshop, and at its 1905 peak the former Pine Level Oil Mill and Fertilizer Company employed about 90 people on a shift. The town sits about 35 miles southeast of Raleigh, just outside the Smithfield-Selma orbit.

Most of Pine Level's present-day map is still rural, with farms and a handful of long-running family businesses giving the center its scale. Pine Level Hardware and Furniture occupies part of a former motor-company building, while the former post office footprint is now home to an ice-cream shop. Hinnant Family Vineyard sits just outside town, adding an agritourism stop beyond the main street. Put together, the old stores, railroad history, farm-supply tradition, and newer local businesses make Pine Level feel like a place where the working town never got fully separated from its origin as a trading point.
