Pine River, MN

Pine River is a Cass County city at the junction of Minnesota State Highways 84 and 371. The 2020 census counted 911 residents. Highway 371 follows Barclay Avenue through town, while county roads connect Pine River to Backus, Brainerd, Walker, and other north-central Minnesota communities. Pine River-Backus School District serves local students, and the town's main street, city offices, and older railroad sites organize everyday movement through the community.

Pine River was incorporated in 1901, and its post office began in 1877. George Barclay, the city's founder, gave his name to the main avenue. The Minnesota and International Railway depot and an early brick school helped establish the original center; a later hotel stood near the railroad and the highway before Highway 371 widened through town. The depot site and brick school remain useful landmarks when reading the town. Pine River's present map still shows those layers: a highway junction, school district, municipal services, and a settlement first shaped by rail and timber-country travel.
