Pinebluff, NC

Pinebluff is a Moore County town of 1,473 residents in the 2020 census, set in the Sandhills along U.S. 1. Walnut Street carries the highway through town, with Aberdeen a few miles northeast and Southern Pines farther up the road. Pinebluff grew as a resort community in the early 1900s, when its pine-country setting drew more attention than the town might get today. Fires changed that trajectory, and the place settled into the smaller residential community you see now. The town's layout still gives away some of that ambition: broad rights-of-way, center squares, and alleys make the core feel more planned than its size suggests.

Lincoln Park School, a Rosenwald school associated with Pinebluff's Black community, and the McLeod Family Rural Complex add important pieces to the local story. Pinebluff Lake and the town's east and west parks provide nearby recreation, while the Lumber River watershed shapes the surrounding Sandhills landscape. The local scoop is that Pinebluff is easy to pass through on U.S. 1, but its wide streets, old resort plans, and surviving landmarks tell you it once aimed to be much more than a highway stop.
