Pinetops, NC

Pinetops grew out of the East Carolina Railway, and you can still read that origin in the street grid. Numbered streets run parallel to the former rail line, named streets cross them, and a remodeled depot remains at Hamlet and First streets. The rail opened the town to commerce in 1900; a post office followed in 1901 and incorporation in 1903. The central blocks of Hamlet and First still hold the town’s old commercial shape, with homes around them and light-industrial properties on the edges.

That history connects to the town’s current map. Pinetops sits in the Rocky Mount metro, with Greenville and Wilson also part of the regional trip pattern. Town services include water, sewer, electricity, waste pickup, police, and a volunteer fire department; an elementary school is in town, and the local employment picture includes an ABB facility and a Sleepworthy factory just outside town limits. Vinedale, an 1850s plantation house near Pinetops, and nearby Adelphia add a more difficult agricultural history to the surrounding landscape. Pinetops is a rail town whose tracks are gone, but whose streets, depot, businesses, and schools still follow the line that built it.
