Pinon, AZ

Pinon is a census-designated place on the Navajo Nation in Navajo County, Arizona. The community sits in northern Arizona near the heart of the Navajo Nation and serves as a secondary growth center for the Pinon Chapter. The local chapter’s history is connected to the former Navajo–Hopi Joint Use Area, whose boundaries were divided on April 18, 1979 after decades of dispute.

Piñon Unified School District serves students from the surrounding communities of Hard Rock, Forrest Lake, Whippoorwill, Blue Gap, Cottonwood, Low Mountain, and Black Mesa. The district opened Piñon Elementary School to 400 students in 1984 and now operates elementary, middle, and high schools. A chapter house and a 1993 mini-mall mark later community investment, while home-site leases and education, health, and social services continue to shape daily life. That network makes Pinon a meeting point for families who travel substantial distances for school, chapter business, and services.
