Pinopolis, SC

Pinopolis is a Berkeley County community on the high ground of South Carolina’s Lowcountry, founded around 1845. That elevation helped the early settlement stand apart from the surrounding wetlands, and the village later developed its own historic district. The larger map is dominated by Lake Moultrie and the Pinopolis Dam, so the older village and the modern reservoir are inseparable parts of the place. That juxtaposition is the whole local read.

Everything changed with the Santee Cooper project. In 1939 the Santee River was dammed, flooding nearly 175,000 acres and creating Lake Moultrie; Pinopolis Dam followed in 1946. The lake now carries boats through a lock and remains one of the defining pieces of the local landscape. Pinopolis’s historic district preserves the older village core, so houses and roads from the pre-reservoir community sit close to the major public-works story that remade the surrounding country. Pinopolis is a place of high ground, water, and a dramatic twentieth-century shift in how the Santee landscape was used.
