Pirtleville, AZ

Pirtleville is an unincorporated Cochise County community about a mile north of Douglas, right in the borderland around the Douglas–Agua Prieta crossing. It grew as a separate neighborhood for Hispanic workers and their families connected to the Douglas smelter and mining economy. That history matters: Pirtleville is not just a line on the edge of Douglas, but a community with its own family stories, cemetery, and long memory of the copper era. Arizona’s first Hispanic governor, Raul Castro, grew up here and went through Douglas High School.

The Pirtleville Cemetery is the place that makes visitors stop and ask questions. Many graves face south toward Mexico, a custom tied to the community’s border setting, and the cemetery holds the remains of early residents who came to work in the smelter. Pirtleville never incorporated, so local services and daily errands are closely linked to Douglas, but its identity is distinct enough that residents still use the name with purpose. You get the local picture by thinking in layers: Mexico across the way, Douglas’s industrial past next door, and a small unincorporated neighborhood carrying its own history.
