About Placerville

Placerville is an El Dorado County city in the Sierra Nevada foothills, with roots in Maidu land and the California Gold Rush. A former Maidu settlement called Indak stood at the town site, and later mining history gave Placerville its famous old nickname, Hangtown, along with the legendary Hangtown fry dish. East of town, Apple Hill and Pleasant Valley have become known for orchards, farms, and wine production. Placerville feels historic, hilly, and very much like a gateway to the Sierra.
