About Plainview

Plainview is a Union County city of 2,060 residents in the 2020 census, set along the southern base of Copper Ridge in the Appalachian Ridge-and-Valley country. Knox County begins just south, Luttrell sits to the northeast, and Maynardville, the county seat, is north. House Mountain rises to the south, giving the city a clear landmark beyond its streets. Plainview incorporated in 1992 after residents fought an annexation effort and chose to keep their own city government. The old school is the heart of the local story. After it closed in the mid-20th century, the building was given to the Plainview Community Club and turned into a community center through volunteer fundraising, pie suppers, dances, and donated labor.

The center still gives the place a meeting hall tied to the same schoolhouse that once served local children. Plainview has no school of its own today; younger students attend Luttrell Elementary, while city hall and the community center form the local civic pair. The practical picture is a small Knoxville-area city held together by a ridge, a few roads, and a community building that was built by its residents.
