Pleasant Hope, MO

Pleasant Hope is a Polk County city in southwest Missouri, with 657 residents in the 2020 census and a place in the Springfield metropolitan area. It sits in the southeast corner of the county at a crossroads served by Missouri 215 and Farm Roads H and KK. The city covers only about 1.57 square miles, but its streets serve a broad rural landscape of fields, churches, and scattered homes. Bolivar is the county seat to the north, while Springfield supplies the larger regional orbit.

The community began with names that sound more provisional: Lick Skillet and then Pin Hook. A Presbyterian school, Pleasant Hope Academy, was built in 1849, and the town took its lasting name from the academy. A general store and post office followed in 1851, and by 1889 the center had shops, a blacksmith, a wagon maker, and a flour mill with a carding mill. Pleasant Hope is a Missouri city where an academy gave the town its name, a crossroads keeps the center connected, and Polk County’s older trading-point history remains visible.
