Pleasanton is a tiny Decatur County city with a name that replaced Pleasant Plain in 1854, after locals wanted to avoid confusion with another Iowa community. The current name is simply a commendatory one, but the town's setting is practical: farmland, county roads, and the Central Decatur Community School District. The 2020 census counted 32 residents, and Central Decatur schools serve the surrounding area. Pleasanton is a place where a name change, not a railroad or river, is the main bit of local lore.
