Pleasantville, OH

Pleasantville began on five acres in Fairfield County, where John Boston and surveyor Ewel Jefferies laid out a village in 1828. The first names were Vicksburg and New Boston before the community settled on Pleasantville, a nod to Pleasant Township and nearby Pleasant Run. Boston built the first house and a log church, and the young village soon picked up a store, hotel, mills, and stage traffic. Ohio Route 188 follows the old Lancaster–New Salem road through Main Street, keeping the original crossroads visible even as the surrounding countryside has changed.

The railroad brought the next big shift. The Toledo & Ohio Central line arrived in 1879, and the depot drew shops and homes eastward. By 1883, Pleasantville had a flour mill, canning operation, blacksmith, wagon maker, marble factory, and a full run of small merchants. The Fairfield Union Academy, organized in 1860, later lent its name to the school district formed when Pleasantville and Rushville schools joined in 1957. Today the village still carries that mix of old routes and everyday civic life: a Main Street address beside the post office, a public pool, local services, and George’s Garage, still connected to the family that opened it.
