Plumas Eureka, CA

Plumas Eureka is a small Plumas County census-designated place in the high Sierra near the historic Plumas-Eureka mining district and Johnsville. The local story starts with gold discovered around Eureka Peak in 1851. Mines, mills, boarding houses, and homes followed, and the settlement grew around the work of pulling ore from the mountain. When mining ended in the 1940s, the buildings and machinery did not simply vanish; they became the pieces of a preserved landscape.

Plumas-Eureka State Park now holds the clearest version of that past. The Mohawk Stamp Mill, Bushman five-stamp mill, mine office, stable, blacksmith shop, and miner’s residence show how the district operated, while the surrounding Sierra remains a lived-in mountain setting rather than a museum set. Plumas Unified schools serve the wider area, and nearby roads connect the community to the rest of Plumas County. Plumas Eureka is best understood as a place where a small present-day settlement sits beside a large mining story, with the state park keeping the work, tools, and buildings close enough to picture.
