Plumwood, OH

Plumwood is an unincorporated census-designated place in Monroe Township, Madison County, with 257 residents in the 2020 census. It sits at the junction of State Route 38 and Arthur Bradley Road, about nine miles north of London and 17 miles south of Marysville. Charles F. Sanford laid out the community on December 23, 1895, and it was first called Sanford. By 1915, the settlement had three general stores, a blacksmith, three threshing outfits, and three hay-baling outfits, serving farms across the surrounding township.

School geography now supplies one of Plumwood's clearest links beyond the crossroads. The community is in Jonathan Alder Local Schools, a 109-square-mile district spread across rural Madison and Union counties; Monroe Elementary sits on State Route 38, while the district's older students attend schools elsewhere in the system. Spring Fork of Little Darby Creek runs along the south and west sides of Plumwood within the Scioto River watershed. The result is a small place defined by a road intersection, a school district with a wide footprint, and a creek that leads its water downstream toward the Scioto.
