Polkville, NC

Polkville is a small town in northwestern Cleveland County in the foothills of North Carolina. North Carolina Highway 226 runs through its center, leading southeast to Shelby and northwest over the South Mountains toward Marion. Highway 182 begins there and heads east toward Lincolnton, making the town a meeting point for routes across upper Cleveland County.

The town's history reaches back to 1791, and an earlier post office called Ola served the Polkville and New House area until 1906. Before rail connections became easier, merchants received goods by horse-drawn wagon from stations at Lawndale, Lattimore, and sometimes Shelby. The John Lattimore House, a historic home near town, was listed on the National Register in 1982. Polkville's present-day map still carries those layers: two state highways, old wagon routes, a preserved house, and a small town center tied to Shelby and the South Mountain edge. The surrounding foothills keep the town's routes pointed in several directions throughout the year. That crossroads role remains part of the town's daily geography.
