Port Byron, NY

Port Byron is a Cayuga County village in the Town of Mentz, with 1,101 residents at the 2020 census. Settlers arrived around 1797, when the place was known as King’s Settlement and later Bucksville. The name changed to Port Byron in 1825 as the community became an Erie Canal port. Today the Owasco Outlet flows north through the village toward the Seneca River, and Routes 31 and 38 meet here; the New York State Thruway crosses the northwest corner without a direct village exit.

Water and transportation still set the rhythm. The canal connected Port Byron to a commercial route across New York, while the outlet supplied mills and shaped the valley. Erie Canal Heritage Park and local history groups keep that canal-era layer close at hand. Port Byron Central School District serves the village, and the older streets sit between the watercourse, Route 31, Route 38, and the Thruway. It is a compact upstate village whose name makes sense once you see the canal, outlet, and roads gathered in one place.
