About Port Hueneme

Commercial shipping and naval operations share Port Hueneme's harbor, putting a working waterfront beside a public beach and pier. Thomas Bard built a wharf at Point Hueneme in 1871 after recognizing the depth of the offshore submarine canyon. The modern Port of Hueneme handles automobiles, produce, liquid bulk, and other cargo, while Naval Base Ventura County's Port Hueneme installation supports the 30th Naval Construction Regiment, four Seabee battalions, and several engineering and warfare commands. At the 2020 census, 21,954 people lived within the city. The public waterfront begins at the 50-acre Hueneme Beach Park, with picnic areas, sand volleyball, a seasonal lifeguard program, and a fishing pier. The pier remains open around the clock, while the Lighthouse Promenade, completed in 2007 and dedicated in 2008, extends from Surfside Drive to the harbor entrance and Point Hueneme Lighthouse.

In 2026, free lighthouse tours are scheduled on the third Saturday from February through October. Bubbling Springs Park adds ballfields, play and picnic facilities inland, with a linear park corridor connecting it toward the beach. At 510 Park Avenue, the Ray D. Prueter Library provides public Wi-Fi, a homework center, meeting rooms, laptop access, and programs for children, teens, and adults. Its Rosenbluth Family Innovation Lab supplies technology and hands-on STEAM programming for prekindergarten through grade 12. Port activities also enter civic life through the Banana Festival: the September 2025 event was the twelfth annual edition, combining public port tours with music, food, and family activities.
