Port Norris, NJ

Port Norris sits where the Maurice River meets Delaware Bay, in Commercial Township's marshy lower-river country. The settlement was established in 1811 and grew into the working side of the Maurice River oyster trade. The railroad to Bivalve turned the river landing into a shipping center: schooners, sloops, and oyster boats moved the harvest, while packing houses, shipyards, and related businesses gathered along the waterfront. By the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Maurice River Cove oysters were being shipped up and down the Eastern Seaboard, and Port Norris had become known for a trade whose real workplace was the river and bay.

Oystering still gives Port Norris its strongest local reference point, even after the 1957 MSX disease devastated Delaware Bay oyster beds and the economy shifted toward other marine products. The Port Norris Historical Society museum and the nearby Bivalve and Shellpile waterfront keep the watermen's history visible through buildings, exhibits, and river geography. Commercial Township schools serve the community, while the town's roads run inland from the mouth of the Maurice.
