Port Tobacco Village, MD

Port Tobacco Village is one of the smallest and most historic communities in Charles County. With fewer than twenty residents living along the Port Tobacco River, it is an exceptionally quiet corner of Southern Maryland. The village was once a bustling colonial seaport and the county seat, sending tobacco and crops down the river until shifting waterways and a late-nineteenth-century courthouse fire led local government to move up the road to La Plata.

Today, the village feels like a peaceful open-air museum surrounded by scenic wetlands and wooded country roads. You will find restored landmarks like the historic courthouse, Stagg Hall, and a vintage one-room schoolhouse right alongside quiet rural homes. While daily conveniences and shopping are just a short drive away in La Plata, Port Tobacco offers a slow, tranquil pace steeped in centuries of Maryland history.
