Port Washington, OH

Port Washington is a Tuscarawas County village with 548 people at the 2020 census, on the Tuscarawas River in eastern Ohio. John Knight settled the place in 1827, when it was known as Salisbury, and the village grew as a major canal stop between Cleveland and Portsmouth. Farmers brought produce from as far as 50 miles away along the old Port Washington Road to reach canal boats; the same road connected the village with Millersburg. The post office has operated under Port Washington since 1832.

Canal commerce left behind a busy 1868 business district with groceries, mills, a tannery, taverns, churches, and a creamery that produced 250 pounds of butter daily. The railroad followed the canal: Pennsylvania Railroad's Port Washington station became a fueling stop, employer, mail point, and passenger link. Today the historical society and museum interpret the canal days; Indian Valley Elementary, Little League fields, Union Cemetery, and Memorial Day service keep the village's civic calendar grounded.
