About Portage

Portage is a city and the county seat of Columbia County, Wisconsin, situated in the Madison metropolitan area. Located on a historic strip of land between the Fox and Wisconsin rivers, the community of approximately 10,236 takes its name from the portage route traversed by Marquette and Joliet in 1673. Public education is served by the Portage Community School District.
