Poth, TX

Poth is a Wilson County town about 35 miles southeast of downtown San Antonio, at the meeting of U.S. Highway 181 and Farm Roads 427 and 541. The 2020 census counted 1,819 residents. The settlement began in 1886 as a switch on the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway, first using the name Marcelina. It became Poth in 1901 after A. H. Poth established a cotton gin, and a depot followed in 1906.

By 1914, Poth had a lumberyard, bank, stores, blacksmith, furniture and hardware businesses, and a cotton gin. The railroad-era town now keeps its daily map around the highway junction, downtown streets, and Poth Independent School District. Poth ISD serves prekindergarten through twelfth grade with an elementary school, middle school, and high school. San Antonio sits within the town's regional orbit, but Poth's own name still belongs to a Wilson County town built around a rail switch, a gin, and the school campus that serves the surrounding countryside.
