About Potosi

Potosi is Washington County’s seat in Missouri’s Lead Belt, southwest of St. Louis. French settler Francis Azor—known as “The Breton”—started the Mine au Breton settlement around lead deposits in 1763. Moses Austin arrived in 1797, secured a Spanish land grant, and expanded mining and smelting into a regional industry. A new county-seat town called Potosi formed across the creek in 1814; Mine au Breton and Potosi joined under one name in 1826. The old Presbyterian church and Austin cemetery remain part of the city’s historic core. Potosi is a Missouri county seat with mining at its foundation.
