Powers Lake, WI

Powers Lake is a Kenosha County census-designated place spread across Randall and Wheatland, with the 2020 census counting 1,401 residents. The lake is the organizing feature: 459 acres, 1.3 miles long, with more than five miles of shoreline. The settlement started under the names Lakeville and Nippersink before taking the name of James B. Powers, an early settler and postmaster. In the 1870s, trains from Chicago moved wheat, oats, corn, and hay, and by the 1890s Chicago visitors and ice houses had made the shore a destination.

The lake still sets the local rhythm. Its water, shoreline, boating rules, and preservation work are managed across several town boundaries, with Randall holding most of the lake and smaller portions in Bloomfield and Wheatland. Powers Lake Yacht Club dates to 1912, and the community's older story includes swimming, sailing, baseball, dances, and summer hotels.
