Powhatan Point, OH

Powhatan Point is a Belmont County village on the Ohio River, in the Wheeling metropolitan area, where Captina Creek enters the larger river. The creek confluence supplies the "Point" in the name, while the first part likely recalls the Powhatan people. The village was platted in 1849, and its post office dates to 1828. The 2020 census counted 1,461 residents.

Water and industry have always shared the map. Coal mines and river shipping supported the village for much of the twentieth century; today many residents work in nearby Moundsville or Wheeling. Captina Creek drains roughly one-third of Belmont County before reaching Powhatan Point, and its watershed includes forest, pasture, reclaimed mine land, a marina, and a village park. The local school pattern is similarly regional: Powhatan Point has K-8 education, with many older students attending River High School in Hannibal. The creek's mouth gives the village a natural meeting point as well as a geographic name. Powhatan Point is a river village at a busy meeting of creek, island, highway, and working valley.
