Poynor, TX

Poynor’s story begins with transportation. The Texas and New Orleans Railroad reached the Henderson County community in 1901, and the town was named for D. A. Poynor, a surveyor for the line. The post office first used Poyner before the spelling settled into Poynor in 1919. Early Poynor gathered the pieces of a working Texas town around that rail connection: general stores, a school, blacksmith, gristmill, cotton gin, barbershop, and even a movie house. The list gives the place a clear main-street past without needing much embellishment.

Today Poynor remains a town in southeastern Henderson County, about 17 miles southeast of Athens and 21 miles northwest of Jacksonville. U.S. Highway 175 follows the broader route through the area, while Caddo Creek’s valley supplies the landscape behind the town. The LaPoynor Independent School District keeps Poynor connected to a shared school community with Larue, and the district’s name itself preserves that local partnership. Poynor is best understood as a railroad town that adapted: the tracks set the town down, and school, highway, and county ties keep it in motion.
