Poynor, TX

Poynor got its start back in 1901 when the Texas and New Orleans Railroad built through southeastern Henderson County, taking its name from line surveyor D. A. Poynor. In its early days, the town quickly grew around the depot with general stores, a cotton gin, a gristmill, and a local movie theater where neighbors gathered on weekends. That quiet, close-knit heritage still shapes the community today.

Today, Poynor offers peaceful country living along U.S. Highway 175, sitting about 17 miles southeast of Athens and 20 miles northwest of Jacksonville. The surrounding East Texas scenery and nearby Caddo Creek provide a relaxed rural backdrop, with Lake Palestine just a short drive away for weekend boating and fishing. Local kids attend the LaPoynor Independent School District, shared with neighboring Larue.
