About Praesel
Praesel is a Milam County census-designated place and unincorporated community just south of Rockdale, with 446 people at the 2020 census. Farm-to-Market Road 487 runs through the center, north to Rockdale and south to U.S. 77; Rockdale is its immediate northern neighbor, while Cameron lies 18 miles north on U.S. 77 and Giddings 32 miles south. The road gives Praesel a clear daily orientation: the CDP is a small settlement in the Rockdale orbit, with Austin and College Station both within a longer regional drive.
Praesel's older story begins in 1951, when Floyd Praesel bought 170 acres and marked lots for homes and businesses. A water tank served the growing neighborhood, and Hillcrest Baptist Church was organized by 1958. In 1970 and 2000, historical accounts put the community at 115 people; it later entered the census as a CDP in 2020. Rockdale Independent School District serves the area. The local scoop is a Texas place whose name grew from a land purchase into a road-centered community with a church, a water tank, and a new census boundary.
