Prairie City, IA

Prairie City is a Jasper County city of 1,700 people at the 2020 census, about 20 miles east of Des Moines. James Elliott established the town in 1856, and the first name was Elliott; it changed after the state already had another town with that name. The prairie is still the clearest orientation clue, but the modern city has grown through parks, neighborhoods, athletic fields, and a school system that serves a wider rural area.

Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge sits right beside town, protecting about 5,500 acres of restored tallgrass prairie, oak savanna, bison habitat, trails, and an auto tour. Prairie City Elementary is part of the PCM Community School District, whose high school is in nearby Monroe. June's Prairie Days carries the old-settler tradition into the current calendar, while Des Moines supplies the larger commute and cultural map. Prairie City is a place where the national refuge is not a distant attraction—it is part of the everyday horizon, with town streets and restored prairie sharing the same edge.
