Presidio, TX

Presidio sits at La Junta de los Ríos, where the Rio Conchos meets the Rio Grande across from Ojinaga, Chihuahua. People have farmed and traded at this river junction for centuries, and the Spanish, Mexican, Indigenous, and later U.S. histories overlap in the same narrow strip of land. Fort Leaton, built in 1848 as a fortified trading post, is a few miles north and gives the borderland story a physical marker. The city’s name comes from the Spanish word for fortress, which fits the area’s older military history. Presidio is a place where the border is not a line in the distance—it is the river, the fields, the crossing, and the history around both banks.
