About Purdy

Purdy is a Barry County city of 1,028 residents in the 2020 census, on the foothills of the Ozarks along Highway 37, eight miles south of Monett and 12 miles north of Cassville. The town was surveyed in 1880 under the name Winslow, and the first train reached Purdy in March 1881 on the Frisco route. Postal records used Purdy from the beginning, and the post office opened in December 1880, so the town carried two names while its streets and rail connection took shape.

Purdy R-II School District operates elementary, middle, and high school programs from the city itself, keeping education at the center of the local map. Water service arrived after a 932-foot well was completed in 1951; sewer and natural-gas systems followed in later decades. City Hall, the school, Highway 37, and the old depot corridor still outline a Barry County service town whose history was built around mail, trains, and the practical needs of farm country.
