Putney, VT

Putney is the primary village and CDP in the town of Putney, Windham County, where the 2020 census counted 571 residents. The village sits near the falls of Sacketts Brook, just west of the Connecticut River, and the Putney Village Historic District covers the central streets. Putney’s settlement began after its 1753 charter, with the main village growing around waterpower, roads, and a compact group of Federal and Greek Revival buildings.

U.S. Route 5 serves as the village’s main street, linking Putney with Bellows Falls to the north and Brattleboro to the south. The historic district includes the 1871 town hall and the former 1906 Central School, while Putney Central School now serves local public students through grade 8. The river valley also holds farms, arts organizations, private schools, and the old mill-site geography around Sacketts Brook. Putney’s character comes from that layered center: a crossroads village, a historic district, and a working Vermont town gathered around a brook and a major north-south road.
