Quasqueton, IA

Quasqueton is an old Buchanan County river town, with the Wapsipinicon giving the community its most memorable physical feature. Rapids once powered a mill, and the river still gives the city a clear edge and a reason for the settlement’s location. Quasqueton is also described as Buchanan County’s oldest community, appearing in the 1840 census record even though later accounts place its founding in 1842. Those dates point to a place that grew early, before the county’s towns had settled into their present pattern.

Just northwest, Cedar Rock State Park preserves the Lowell and Agnes Walter House, a home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and now operated as a museum by the state. Wright’s design, its site along the river, and the surrounding acreage give Quasqueton a connection to twentieth-century architecture that feels unusually substantial for a city of this size. The contrast is part of the appeal: one direction leads to an old Iowa settlement shaped by water and early roads, the other to a carefully designed house that has become one of the region’s best-known places to visit.
