Quilcene, WA

Quilcene is an unincorporated community and census-designated place at the head of Quilcene Bay on Washington's Olympic Peninsula. The 2020 census counted 598 residents. The bay is a saltwater arm of Hood Canal, and the Big Quilcene and Little Quilcene rivers frame the community as they descend from the Olympic Mountains. The name comes from the Twana language and refers to a Twana group and village on Quilcene Bay, connecting the modern settlement to the people who lived along Hood Canal before American settlement.

Mount Walker rises nearby to 2,804 feet, and its road-accessible summit looks across Puget Sound toward Mount Rainier and the surrounding Olympic country. Olympic National Forest lands around Quilcene hold Douglas fir, Pacific rhododendron, Oregon grape, and salal. For 32 seasons, a turn-of-the-century dairy farm outside town hosted the Olympic Music Festival before the event moved elsewhere after 2016.
