Quinlan, TX

Quinlan is a southern Hunt County city about five miles west of Lake Tawakoni, with Texas 34 and Highway 276 tying it to Greenville, Terrell, and the lake country. The 2020 census counted 1,414 residents. The place began in 1892 as a Texas Midland Railroad depot, and its name honors George A. Quinlan, a Houston and Texas Central railway manager. The railroad gave the town its first reason to gather, while the surrounding cotton country gave it freight to move.

By 1925, Quinlan had become a retail trade center for parts of three counties. Cotton gins, banks, schools, churches, and downtown businesses followed; oil later changed the local economy, and Lake Tawakoni brought another burst of activity in the 1950s. Quinlan ISD keeps the school connection close, with Thompson Middle and Ford High in the district. The city still feels like a crossroads between farm country, the lake, and the regional roads to the west - a place whose downtown grew from a depot and never stopped serving the surrounding country.
