Raceland, KY

Raceland's name came from a racetrack. The community was incorporated as Chinville in 1915, then took the name of a thoroughbred track that operated here in the 1920s. That history is visible in the city's setting in the Ohio River valley, where U.S. 23 runs through town toward Ashland and the wider Huntington-Ashland region. The older land story reaches back to a Revolutionary War grant to Abraham Buford, whose property was later divided into tracts.

Raceland's working landscape is tied to rail. The Raceland Car Shop was built in the 1920s beside the CSX Russell Classification Yard and was once one of the largest railway car repair shops in the United States. Local routines center on the Raceland-Worthington Independent School District, whose Campbell Elementary, middle school, and high school are in the city, along with a city-run community center used for meetings and rentals. Raceland is laid out as a highway and rail town, with school buildings, municipal services, and the car shop sharing the same corridor.
