Racine, MN

Racine is a small Mower County city in the Root River watershed, set among farm country in northeastern Minnesota. The city was platted in 1890, and U.S. Route 63 runs along its west side, connecting it with Stewartville to the north and Spring Valley to the southeast. The name reaches back to the river itself: Racine is the French translation of “root,” matching the earlier Dakota name for the waterway. In the 2020 census, Racine had 458 residents.

The city’s scale is modest, but the watershed gives it a wider geographic story. Water from the surrounding creeks moves toward the Root River and eventually the Mississippi, while the highway carries farm traffic and local trips across the county. Racine Township wraps around the city, though the city remains a separate municipality with its own streets, services, and center. That combination — a small platted town, a named river system, and a route linking larger communities — is the heart of Racine. It is a place where the map stays legible: Route 63 on one side, fields on every horizon, and the Root River landscape underneath it all.
