Raleigh, MS

Raleigh is the Smith County seat in the Piney Woods of south-central Mississippi. The community began as Indian Springs and took the Raleigh name when the county seat moved from Fairfield in 1834. Its courthouse square still gives the town a civic center, and the 1912 Smith County Courthouse is one of the area's most recognizable buildings. The name honors English explorer Sir Walter Raleigh, while the town's history reaches through county government, farming, and the Civil War.

Raleigh High School serves students from Raleigh, Polkville, and Sylvarena through the Smith County School District, keeping the county seat tied to neighboring communities. The annual Raleigh Heritage Festival brings local history into the public calendar, and the old National Tobacco Spitting Contest remains part of the town's lore. Courthouse offices, the sheriff's department, school traffic, and roads leading through the Piney Woods give Raleigh its present rhythm. It is a county-seat town where the main square still carries the work of records, courts, school life, and community gatherings.
